How I Found the Best Mattress and FINALLY Got a Good Night’s Sleep

It’s surprising to note that spending every night on the wrong mattress can negatively affect your health. Seems like a small thing, but it’s true. There is a difference between tossing and turning during the night for seven to eight hours and having quality, restful sleep. Symptoms of a bad night’s sleep include yawning, back pain, stiff neck, and headaches, as well as the feeling of “pins and needles” in the extremities and worst of all falling asleep during the daytime, which can be detrimental if you doze off while driving or in the middle of the day at your job. As humans, we are biologically programmed to need sleep. The brain shuts down more easily from lack of sleep that from hunger. Lack of proper rest can also wear down your health a little at a time. The stress of scant sleep can display itself in mental fogginess, and a whole host of chronic diseases that take hold due to exhaustion.

The trick is to find the right mattress for you (and your partner if applicable) so that you can get that needed rest each and every night. With that in mind, I am going to share How I Found the Best Mattress and FINALLY Got a Good Night’s Sleep.

The first step is to do some in-person shopping. Yes, you like ordering from the web, and it’s convenient; however, you need to actually try out the mattress yourself. Yes, go into a store and take a lie-down on the store model. Don’t worry, they usually have protective coverings on the mattress, so you won’t feel like you are getting into someone else’s bed. Take someone with you to hold your belongings like shopping bags or other valuables while you concentrate on the feel of the mattress. Questions to ask yourself are:

1) Does the mattress provide proper support for your shoulders back, buttocks, legs, and feet? You should feel like the mattress has some “give” to it” but you don’t sink into it like a hammock. One very expensive mattress that I tried made me feel like it would swallow me whole, so I got up immediately and moved on. I had to find the best mattress for back pain, after all!

2) Do you get a sinking feeling when you lie down? If you do the mattress is too soft. A common mistake people make is that they believe that the softer the mattress, the more comfortable it is. This could not be further from the truth. If you have a back condition or trouble with your joints, like I do, you need a firmer mattress. Unless you are the princess with a pea hidden under her bedding, you don’t need layers and layers of soft, downy material to be comfortable.

2) Electric Bed, Yes or No? One popular type of mattress is the electric inflatable kind, where each person can adjust their side of the bed to the proper firmness. It’s really nothing more than two expensive air mattresses with a pump, in most cases. If you choose that option, you’d better plan on staying on your side of the bed, as if you accidently roll over to your partner’s softer side, you will feel like you are falling, which is the last thing you want at night. Bad dreams of falling are scary enough.

My husband and I know this for a fact as we got one of those mattresses from well-meaning relatives as a wedding present and every night he was up against a firm wall and I was on my side trying not to tip over into “soft land”. After five years of precarious sleeping, a bucket of mop water spilled and made contact with the electric pump under the bed frame and shorted it out. I’m just glad we weren’t in it when it happened. Yup, if you’re frequently a side sleeper like me, you should also consider searching for the best mattress for side sleepers.

3) Not All Memory Foams Are Created Equal: If a memory foam mattress is paper thin, it may not provide the support that you need. One good thing about a good memory foam mattress is that it will contour to you and your bedmate’s body, giving gentle support. Don’t just assume that the most expensive memory foam type mattress is the best, but it’s best not to go for the cheapest one either. Make sure you try it out first, even if you will be ordering it later online. You can’t tell anything about a mattress when it is rolled up into a coil, so find a store that features that brand and give it a go–you don’t have to buy from that particular dealer if you find a better bargain through online comparison shopping.

Through my experience, I found that it’s important to take your time to shop for a mattress. Some people will go to three different stores to find the perfect outfit, but buy a mattress as if they were picking out a handbag. Plan ahead, take someone with you–particularly your partner if you will be living together. Ask about delivery charges, tax and warranties. If the company won’t give any type of guarantee for their product, steer clear.

When I found the mattress that was perfect for us, I also bought pillows of the same brand, as I loved the gentle, yet structured support the material offered. In my case, it was a spring foam bed. For you, it might be another type. What I am glad of is that we took our time and picked out the right mattress for us, plus pillows, plus mattress cover. We did save part of the queen sized electric bed. The bed frame, detached from all of the electronic equipment that ran behind it, made a lovely reusable frame for our new mattress. We used the money we saved to spend on the mattress, as that is more important than the bed frame.

If your family wants to give you a mattress for a wedding present or housewarming gift, ask for a store gift card instead. They will mean well; however, a mattress is an item that only the person or persons using the item can pick out. We are so satisfied with our new mattress and now we both get a wonderful, restful, night’s sleep.
